This world-renowned archipelago is located between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada. The area is perfect for a myriad of recreational activities from deep beneath the depths to the high mountainous looms overlooking the majestic water views. Anacortes is an island community; however, it is easily reached by car from Seattle and rather than boarding a boat you can simply drive over a bridge. The other islands require transportation by boat or airplane. With the easy access to Anacortes, the neighboring communities of LaConner, Mount Vernon, Burlington and Whidbey Island are well connected. The northern most terminal of the Washington State Ferry system is located in Anacortes. From here, you can island hop from the U.S. and on into Canada. The community welcomes thousands of visitors each year as they set off to explore the infamous San Juan's or Canada. The weather is fabulous. The islands are situated in a "rain shadow", hidden on the back side of the Olympic Mountains. The annual rainfall is about 50% less than Seattle making it a great get away. We've had the opportunity to visit the area on a regular basis. We stake out a base camp near LaConner at a Thousand Trails Resort. It's situated right on the water and is ideal for our entire family as well as providing easy access for island hoping. Anacortes also has some superb accommodations. You'll want to check out our Travel Network for some serious savings on accommodations and airfare to Anacortes. When you visit the area plan on a day shopping at nearby Burlington's Factory Outlet Stores as well as the Old Town of Anacortes. Of course, you will want to island hop aboard the ferry system. You can either take your car, bicycle or walk aboard the ferry. With our family of 6, we enjoy leaving the car at the ferry dock, board the ferry and make a day of exploring aboard the ferry. We'll hop off the boat at nearby Friday Harbor or some other secluded location. It's a lot of fun and a very inexpensive adventure.
