Astoria Dates Back to Lewis & Clark... The beginnings of this now historic town dates back to the Lewis and Clark Expedition when spent the winter of 1805 at Fort Clatsop. A few years later another fort was built; Fort Astoria, creating a destination site for trappers, traders, explorers and missionaries. Being the Northern most Oregon City, Astoria Oregon, on Route 101, this is the beginning place for the famous Oregon Coast Bike Route. Columbia River Maritime Museum: If you like boats, don't miss this! The kids like it too, 503-325-2323. 2. Fort Clatsop: Go back in time here and see how the Lewis and Clark Expedition managed. A great source for learning, 503-861-2471. 3. Flavel House Museum: Save this for the one's interested in the Victorian era. There are some very unique artifacts and furnishings from this period. You'll get a good idea of how people lived, 503-325-5825. 4. Astoria Column: This is an observation platform standing 125 feet high located on Coxcomb hill yielding 635 feet above the Columbia River. It was initially build in 1926 in recognition of the discovery and exploration of the area. It provides an impressive view, 503-325-2963. 5. Fort Astoria: The first American Outpost west of the Mississippi River, parts of Fort Astoria are re-created for you, 503- 325-5825. 6. Heritage Museum: Here you will get the broad historical view of the area, they have lots of photo's and change the exhibits periodically. Kids may not like this museum unless they are really into looking at artifacts and pictures. For me, I like it because it gives a historical perspective, 503-325-2203. 7. The Uppertown Firefighters Museum: The kids will love this one! The museum is located in an 1896 fire station with old fire engines and equipment, 503-325-2203. If you are camping in the area, you'll want to check out Fort Stevens State Park . Astoria is also making headway in the Cruise Industry.
