Florence has, what I call a New Town area and an Old Town area. There are many shops, restaurants, offices and even a modern hospital within the confinements of Florence Oregon. You'll like the "Old Town" feel amongst the "New Town" atmosphere. Activities In And Around FlorenceThe Old Town is one of the most charming areas along the coast. Check it out. You can enjoy a little scenic dinner cruise aboard the Westward Ho, located at the Old Town dock area. Or, try golfing in Florence Oregon. The Sandpines Golf Course takes you through the dunes and pines. You don't need a sand trap on this course! Call 800-468-4833.We found the most unique annual event is the Dune Musher's Mail Run. Held every year in March, dog sled teams race their way from Horsfall Beach, near Coos Bay, to Florence Oregon. It's a 72 mile run. Pretty interesting. The major attraction is of course, the dunes. They are impressive. They formed some 10-30 million years ago from the weathering of nearby coastal mountains. The dunes have a life of their own. They are in constant flux. Winds blow the sand particles north each winter and south each summer and yet,at the sametime, with the constant off-shore wind, the sand moves eastward. Over thousands of years the dunes have overtaken forests and anything in it's way. You can see remenants of trees, like little islands, that the dunes have not yet swallowed. There are also numerous lakes throughout the Oregon Dunes. Fresh water is trapped behind the dunes creating the many lakes. Great opportunities for fishing, water skiing and of course off road vehicles for the dunes. Get ahold of the Florence Chamber to get some detailed info: Florence Chamber.
