Hood River OR...where playing just begins
Hood River OR...the place where the wind never rests. Hood River, OR became famous for it's wind sports; however, there is more recreational options than just wind surfing.
Wind Worshippers... gather to this scenic part of the Columbia River from all parts of the globe. Some come for a week-end, a week, an entire summer or forever. There's plenty to do.
When most town radio stations report traffic or the DOW Jones, Hood River OR has on-going reports on the wind speed and weather. These are critical factors within the windsurfing capital of the world.
Windsurfers began accending on this little community of 6000 about twenty years ago. It hasn't been the same since. A struggling community supported by the orchards and declining timber industry in the early 80's, the wind worshippers changed Hood River OR forever.
To draw the crowds to Hood River OR is the natural effects of the towering basalt cliffs along the Columbia creating a natural wind tunnel, blasting a steady 25 mph wind and higher.
You gotta see this place to believe it. It's awesome. The area also serves the kayakers, rafters, cyclists, fishermen, sailors and golf. Here's an added note. When I was bicycling around the area, I took an umbrella and attached it to the handle bars on my downwind runs. I didn't peddle one stroke. The wind filled the umbrella and I was off! I did use my brakes a lot though.
During the off-season for wind sports, Hood River OR caters to the skier crowd. Mood Hood is in the near distance.
Kite Boarding is becoming the latest craze in Hood River OR. It's simply a large kite that propels a surfer across the water and into the air, as much as 40 feet.
To enjoy Hood River OR, you don't have to be an outdoor lover. There's some quaint areas to explore like the downtown section with it's renovated buildings, new restaurants and a host of lodging options..
Hop on the 1911 train and go for a four-hour tour through the Hood River Valley. You'll pass the many orchards and scenic foothills of Mount Hood, that looms in the distance.
If you are driving, take the Fruit Loop. You'll pass the orchards and wineries.
My only other comments, if you like to play, come to Hood River OR.
Have Fun!
