McKenzie River...
Is Timeless

McKenzie River, Oregon, begins its start at Clear Lake and runs to the outskirts of Springfield, approximately 60 miles. Clear Lake, its primary source is spring-fed, is known for its clear waters and cold temperatures. Much hasn't changed over the course of time in this remote area yet so accessible.

President Herbert Hoover was one who wouldn't miss a single fishing season on the McKenzie River after he served his presidency. He had a love for the remote area even though the driving time is only about an hour out of Eugene.

Since Hoover's time on the river, there are a couple of fancy Bed & Breakfast's that emerged along the river and a sculpture garden at Leaburg. The river rafting has offered a new kind of adventure since Hoover's time too. Now, the river shares with the rafting boats and the dory like crafts that were developed for the Northwest fishermen.

The McKenzie River is a place to get away from it all. Even though Highway 126 runs along the river, you really never know. The river and highway part ways long enough to enjoy the solitude, except for a couple of tucked away resorts along the riverbanks. The trees along the river encapsulate you, like in a cocoon. It's simply timeless on the river, just you, the river, the forest, and the (hopefully) blue sky

The 26-mile McKenzie River National Recreation Trail begins above Clear Lake and goes to the McKenzie Bridge. It's a spectacular trail passing the pristine waters of Clear Lake, the 100-foot Sahalie Falls, 70-foot Koosah Falls and the stunning Tamolitch Falls. You'll meander through the old-growth forest, across streams and ancient lava beds. Mountain bikers love the trail too, some traveling a little too fast, so use caution.

Near Highway 242 and just located off the trail is a wonderful place to take a break, the Belknap Lodge & Hot Springs. Travelers have stopped here to refresh themselves for some 130 years, join in on the legacy. The spring-fed pool at 102° is perfect for relaxing the tired muscles. You can also wander through the resorts beautiful landscaped gardens.

If you want to engage in the rafting experience, the McKenzie River offers the opportunity. Most rafting trips occur between Paradise Campground, just above the McKenzie Bridge, and Marten Creek down river just east of Vida. The water moves rather swiftly between Paradise Campground and Marten Creek. You'll alternate between smooth stretches, the occasional hole, a standing wave and the thrill of taking on the class 4 at Martin Rapids. There are various outfitters that offer guided trips down this exciting section of the river.

For the kayakers, you can begin your trip above Paradise Campground. The water is shallower, however, you will enjoy parts of the river where most rafters will not attempt. Before you attempt the river, make sure you've done your homework, check the river first. Rivers change with water levels and obstructions. You want to know what's ahead before you encounter it.

Should you want to partake in a truly western experience, float the river in one of the McKenzie drift boats. You'll have a combined experience of engaging in the rivers rapids to catching some rainbow trout, steelhead or salmon from one of the many fishing holes along the river. The drift boats are unique with their high sides. Unlike the rafters, for the most part you will not get wet, even running the rapids. And you don’t have to paddle; your guide will do all of the work. You can sit back and gaze at the beauty, fish and squander in natures finest.

Below Vida the river quiets down substantially. Below the dam at Leaburg the water continues its slow moving pace, meandering through farms lands and open meadows passing some grand view homes soaking in the panoramic views.
