Newport Oregon...
the Premiere Resort Town

Newport Oregon...the Year-Round Resort Town. Newport is both a vacationers paradise and commerical fishing industrial town. It's the home of the largest fishing fleet on the Oregon Coast. You'll see both the pleasure craft amongst the commercial fishermen as they make their way out of the bay.

Newport Oregon got it's start in the late 1800's as both an oystering community and one of the earliest beach resort towns. Many of the orginal buildings and cottages can be seen today. Newport Oregon is a working port surrounded by the tourist festives. At the Bay Front you'll find the ice-cream parlors, chowder shops, souvenir shops amongst the commercial fishing boats and packing houses.

Attractions for You and the Kids

Our kids love walking this town, every builing has a new and exciting experience. You'll be lured into Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. When you go in, do not be afraid of the floor that disappears. It sure had me going, and a couple of our kids would not walk across it. My wife would not even enter the museum, things looked too real from the outside.

The Undersea Gardens is pretty neat too. You'll watch a diver feed the fish. Also note along the dock the numerous sea lions. They capture your attention for a long time.

You do need to get over to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, one of the top in the country. The focus is sea life native to the Oregon Coast. If you're like me you can spend an entire day here visiting all of the exhibits. You need to get here early, if you want some quality time at the museum. The line of people can get long.

Yaquina Light Houses

Newport Oregon is home to 2-historic light houses, Yaquina Bay Light House and Yaquina Head Light House. Yaquina Bay Light House began operation in 1871; however, ships coming from the north could not see the light. So, another light house had to be built.

The plan was to build a light house at Otter Crest, a few miles to the north. But somehow someone made a mistake a brought the building materials to Yaquina Head. When the mistake was discovered, those that be decidied it was too much work to remove the building materials to another location. After-all, they would have to fight the surf again, etc., and put workers in danger. They decidied to build it right where the materials landed, at Yaquina Head.

The Yaquina Head Light House is 93 feet tall, 3 miles north of Newport Oregon. It's the tallest light house on the Oregon Coast and is still functioning. Tours are available.

Newport's Beaches

The beaches at Newport range from tiny rock coverage to sand. The area is also perfect for kite flying. To the north is Agate Beach. This was a popular destination for rock hounds; however, the sand has taken over the beach. Moolack Beach, about 5 miles to the north, is very popular for agate hunters. Check it out, the kids love it.

Camping ...Newport Area

Camping in the area is very popular. Beverly Beach State Park, the second businest campground on the Oregon Coast, is just to the north of Newport. There's 257 campsites on a 140 acres. You'll have access to several miles of beach.

South Beach State Park is just 2 miles south of Newport Oregon with some 265 sites. There's also easy beach access.

Newport Marine & RV Park, 600 Southeast Bay Blvd. There are 38 sites. 541-867-3321.
